Maybe it’s not nice to separate Gretchen Lohse from epically eerie/playful Philly band Yellow Humphrey — you can blame Folkadelphia’s Fred Knittel for singling her out for this solo booking. Yellow Humphrey is a large-scale band; local cats and kittens like Steve Quaranta, Rick Flom and Naeemah Maddox wove oddly elegant instrumentation (flutes, melodica, xylophone, dulcimer) through slow grooves on last year’s Featherweights. But the smartly hurt lyrics and subtly contagious melodies of Yellow Humphrey’s heartbroken, heartwarming songs are Lohse’s, and her voice is a fragile and potent focus. Yeah, let’s hear what makes her tick.

Tue., Aug. 14, 8 p.m., $5, followed by a screening of The Beast Pageant, PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 267-519-9651, philamoca.org.
