Perhaps you’ve heard: There’s a new Bob Dylan album, Tempest (Columbia). Judging from set lists from the current U.S. tour (available at bobdylan.com and expectingrain.com), no one’s told Dylan yet. Not a single song from Tempest has been played live yet; instead, expect highlights from recent-ish releases like Love and Theft (2001) and Modern Times (2006); classics like “Tangled Up in Blue” and “Like a Rolling Stone” and the occasional curveball (“Joey,” “Man in the Long Black Coat”). As for Tempest, it’s another slightly overpraised latter-day Dylan album, filled with bluesy shuffles concerned with death, decay and destruction. But the spiky guitars of “Narrow Way,” the surprisingly melodic “Pay in Blood” and the sinister “Scarlet Town” show the 71-year-old Dylan still in inspired form.
