The piano trio is the most basic ingredient of jazz, raw dough that can be molded and spiced into innumerable new flavors. As the name implies, Toronto-based trio Myriad3 prides themselves on sampling as many of those variations as possible. Pianist Chris Donnelly has bridged jazz and classical on his own releases, most notably his Escher-inspired solo suite Metamorphosis. Drummer Ernesto Cervini leads his own impressionistic modern jazz quartet, while bassist Dan Fortin toggles between jazz and rock. They came together accidentally, when a bassist on another bandleader’s gig cancelled and Fortin stepped in, but the match seems preordained. Their collaboration takes the form of a triangle with three distinct points, rather than a simpatico three-voices-speaking-as-one. Each member has a defined personality that coexists with the others; just check out their rendition of Count Basie’s “C Jam Blues,” which plays out like an iPod on shuffle.
