If Lenola was his kinky pop ensémble, and Like a Fox his squooshy, synth-based band, what the hell could JJL be to Jersey Pines prince Jay Laughlin? The singer, guitarist and Ray Davies-meets-Neil Tennant lyricist has done brash and he’s done subtle. JJL takes the Fox rhythm section (Pete Girgenti on drums, Brian Wilkinson on bass) with Laughlin crank-yanking guitars for maximum buzz-saw effect without losing those swooshing keyboards. Glossy, flossy power-pop for sure.
